League Positions on the Environment
League members became concerned about depletion and conservation of natural resources as far back as the 1920s and 30s when the League undertook a study of flood control, erosion and the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority.... Since then, the League has been in the forefront of the environmental protection movement, helping to frame landmark legislation and seeking to preserve and protect life-supporting ecosystems and public health. (LWV Impact on Issues, 2016-18)

In true grassroots fashion, our more than 500,000 members from all 50 states engage in the League's consensus-building process to develop positions on issues related to the environment and preservation of natural resources.  On the authority of these democratically adopted positions, our state and national Leagues act to educate voters and advocate for legislation.  Click below to learn more about the League's current positions on issues related to the environment.

LWV Inter-League Organization Upper Mississippi River Region Sponsored 2023 Farm Bill Briefing on 8/7

At noon on August 7, LWV UMRR hosted Duane Hovorka, Senior Policy Specialist at the National Wildlife Federation. Duane is a lobbyist working on the Farm Bill, and he shared an update on where the Farm Bill is now and what the prognosis is for the Bill in days to come. This discussion was led by LWV UMRR Chair Mary Ellen Miller. Duane's long involvement in Farm Bill development makes him very knowledgeable; this talk provides a great update on what's happening with this critical piece of legislation.

Duane Hovorka is Senior Agriculture Policy Specialist at the National Wildlife Federation, where he does policy analysis and lobbying on Farm Bill conservation issues. Prior to NWF, he directed the Izaak Walton League of America’s agriculture program. Duane spent most of his life in Nebraska where he worked for wildlife and sustainable agriculture organizations dealing with agriculture, wildlife and water policy at the state and federal level.
