LWVLA Voting Resources


Voter education is an important League priority.  Our Voting Resource pages have been developed by members of our Voter Services team as a reference for both the public and our members who volunteer throughout the community to educate and advocate for voters.

We believe in the integrity of our elections, so we provide current, reliable and accurate information about voting for others.  We want them to share our trust in the outcome of our elections.

If you have voting questions or problems, call our Voter Helpline, 608-285-2141 and talk with a member of the LWV of WI. La Crosse area volunteers will also be available to provide local voting assistance.

Voting by Absentee Ballot

Request an Absentee Ballot

Under Wisconsin law, voters do not need a reason or excuse,
such as being out of town on Election Day, to vote absentee. 

Any registered voter who prefers to vote by absentee ballot may request one.  
Don’t wait--send your request as soon as possible.



Options for requesting an absentee ballot:

Request an ongoing absentee ballot--either online or with the printed form --if you are indefinitely confined. You do not need to provide a photo ID with this kind of request.

Complete Your Ballot
  1. Your municipal clerk will send your absentee ballot by mail. You can track the progress of your ballot online here.
    • Be sure to carefully follow the directions that come with your ballot. Watch this video on completing an absentee ballot.


  2. And check Vote411 for information about your candidates’ backgrounds and positions before you vote.
  3. You will need a witness to sign and put their address on the envelope of your ballot attesting to your having filled the ballot out yourself. Again, be sure that you are following directions.

    The ballot can be rejected if the envelope is not correctly filled out. If you need help finding a witness, call our Voter Helpline number 608-285-2141.

    If time is sufficient, your clerk may contact you to remedy any problems with your completion of the envelope holding your ballot. Return your ballot as soon as possible.

 

Return Your Ballot
  1. When your ballot is completed, witnessed, and sealed in its envelope, return it to your municipal clerk.
    • Walk it into your municipal clerk’s office.
    • Mail it in. We recommend mailing your ballot as soon as possible.
  2. Be sure to leave sufficient time for your ballot to arrive. Your completed absentee ballot must be delivered to your polling place no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can also deliver your ballot in person to your polling place on Election Day.

Early In-Person Voting

Municipal clerks will conduct In-Person Absentee or Early Voting beginning two weeks before Election Day. Contact your municipal clerk to learn where and when you can vote.  You will need to show your acceptable photo ID for voting when voting by in-person absentee ballot.

 

Voting on Election Day.

The polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day, November 5, 2024.  Find your polling place here.

If you need to register to vote that day, bring an acceptable Proof of Residence. You will also need to show your Acceptable Photo ID before you can vote.
