In his talk Purified: How Recycled Sewage is Transforming Our Water, veteran journalist Peter Annin shows that wastewater has become a surprising weapon in America’s war against water scarcity. Annin probes deep into the water reuse movement in five water-strapped states—California, Texas, Virginia, Nevada, and Florida. He has drunk beer made from purified sewage, visited communities where purified sewage came to the rescue, and examines how one of the nation’s largest wastewater plants hopes to recycle one hundred percent of its wastewater by 2035.

A brilliant reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn—both harrowing and ferociously funny—told from the enslaved Jim's point of view.

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.
Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first-century American literature.    ~Goodreads

What is the Federal SAVE Act?
Action Item for April 1, 2025
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote tomorrow -April 1, 2025- on a bill that could open the door for discriminatory practices and voter disenfranchisement of millions of Americans.
Tell your representative to vote NO on the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
The SAVE Act (H.R. 22) would require individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote or update their voter registration. This is a disingenuous effort—federal law already makes it illegal for noncitizens to vote in all federal elections.
sav
Objections to the SAVE Act:
**The bill is unnecessary. Voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering to vote—violators are breaking the law.

**Every time a person registers to vote or updates their registration (from a move, marriage, etc), they would need to show a passport or birth certificate in person. Millions of eligible voters do not have easy access to required documents.
**69 million American women may not have a birth certificate with their legal name on it and would not be able to use their birth certificate to prove citizenship. The SAVE Act does not include proof of name change or marriage certificate as acceptable proof of identity.
**The SAVE Act would make it impossible for a voter to mail in a registration application. And it would eliminate the League's ability to conduct voter registration drives.

**The SAVE Act could disenfranchise millions of American voters.
