LWV Statement Congress Do Duty

On the 105th anniversary of its founding, the League of Women Voters sent a letter to Congressional leadership regarding the organization's grave concern over the state of our nation.

Specifically, the League writes to urge Congress to exercise its authority to protect the rule of law, defend the Constitution, and end the overreach that the Executive Branch has shown in the last few weeks. The letter linked below  outlines the League's concerns and is signed by leadership from every state League and DC affiliate in the country.

The League of Women Voters opposes
the SAVE Act.

 Objections to the SAVE Act:

**The bill is unnecessary. Voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering to vote—violators are breaking the law.

**Every time a person registers to vote or updates their registration (from a move, marriage, etc), they would need to show a passport or birth certificate in person
Millions of eligible voters do not have easy access to required documents.

**69 million American women may not have a birth certificate with their legal name on it and would not be able to use their birth certificate to prove citizenship. The SAVE Act does not include proof of name change or marriage certificate as acceptable proof of identity.

**The SAVE Act would make it impossible for a voter to mail in a registration application. And it would eliminate the League's ability to conduct voter registration drives.

**The SAVE Act could disenfranchise millions of American voters.
