19th Amendment Centennial Closing Celebration Canceled

With regret, the LWVLA has decided to cancel our 19th Amendment Centennial Closing Celebration scheduled for September 2. Given the current data about Covid/Delta variant transmissions in the La Crosse area, we feel we can't ensure the safety of those attending, and we want to be sure that everyone's health is at the forefront of any League-sponsored event.

Speaking of Democracy
Join us for an In-person, Informal,  Book Club Social!
Monday, August 23
6:30 - 8:00 PM

We will gather at Riverside International Friendship Gardens, at the picnic shelter if it is available. If not, we'll meet at the entryway to proceed to another spot. So bring a chair, just in case! Also bring snacks or drinks for yourself if you wish -- sharing is not planned due to Covid.

We will talk about anything -- future book possibilities, past books, Book Club issues, or just what's new in our lives. It will be great to see one another in person! Hope to see you there.

All Are Welcome!

Roughly 206K People Removed
From Wisconsin Voter Rolls In Routine Maintenance

from WPR, 8/4/21:

Reid Magney, spokesperson for the Wisconsin Elections Commission, said Wednesday the voter list removals are aimed at ensuring the integrity of the rolls.

"It is designed to make sure the list is current, but we are not trying to kick people off the list for some sort of minor infraction," Magney said. "We are very confident that these are people who have moved and would need to re-register to vote anyway, assuming that they are still in the state and still want to vote."

What local election clerks think of proposed bills

In July, Hope Karnopp published a feature story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel based on her interviews with local election clerks about the proposed changes to voting laws being considered in the Wisconsin legislature. This article, shared by LWVWI with local Leagues, is available on our website.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp and former RNC Chair Michael Steele discuss how political innovation can break partisan gridlock with Katherine Gehl, founder of the Institute for Political Innovation. Katherine Gehl and Michael Steele discuss their support for Final Five Voting and the National Popular Vote. Both of these alternative voting systems were topics of programs sponsored by our League last year. Final Five Voting is proposed as a voting innovation in bills with bipartisan sponsors in both houses of the Wisconsin legislature.  A link to this video is available on our website.
